Normanby by Spital
Normanby derives from the Old English "Northman+by", or "Northman village". In the Domesday Book, it is called Normanebi.
"Spital" is a reference to the ancient hospital for the poor previously situated in Spital-in-the-Street on Ermine Street (now the A15), (an old Roman road between Lincoln and the Humber.
The village is just off the A15.
In the middle of the village is St. Peter's Church (dedicated to St.Peter and St.Paul) dating from the 12th century - it is a Grade I listed building and was extensively renovated at the end of the 19th century. Next door to the Church is the local pub, The Bottle and Glass, which serves a good selection of beers and food, and the village Post Office/store.
